Salvadori STEM Program

After School Program

Salvadori after school STEM program engages several of our scholars in hands-on activities that expose them to science and technology.  This year, our scholars are studying Skate Parks and Monuments.  At the end of each 6-week cycle, our Whitman scholars are able to create scale versions of the topic they explored.  Salvadori was gifted to us through our relationship with former Council Member Mattheiu Eugene.

Urban Advantage is a citywide program that encourages student engagement in science through free trips to the top 9 science museums in the city and support teachers with materials for their hands-on component for our students. We utilize all resources and invite parents to our Science Fair and Family Science Days sponsored by Urban Advantage to boost family engagement and the overall science capital of our students.

Brooklyn Psychotherapy

Brooklyn Psychotherapy provides therapy to a diverse population with a variety of needs. Their therapists use a range of modalities to provide psychotherapy to our scholars in a warm, comfortable, personal environment. Modalities include psychodynamic, relational, mindfulness, play therapy, and behavioral. At Whitman, there is a referral process for students who receive these services.

Social Studies

Illustrative Math - IM K–12 Math is a problem-based core curriculum built on the principle that all students are capable learners of grade-level mathematics. Students learn math by doing math. They are encouraged to use their current understanding of math, their lived experiences, and the world around them as resources for problem solving. By starting with what students already know, teachers invite all students to contribute to mathematical learning, centering student thinking, and being responsive as students develop conceptual understanding.

HMH Into Literature -

HMH Into Reading was built from the ground up using the latest in literacy research to ensure every student learns to read and write with confidence.

Science-Backed Instruction

The HMH Into Reading curriculum is based on research in the essential elements of literacy with scaffolds for multilingual learners and a Spanish-English biliteracy solution.

Increased Student Outcomes

Robust assessment data give teachers the information they need to differentiate reading instruction and monitor student progress toward literacy goals.

Texts That Build Knowledge

Teachers have access to more award-winning, high-interest texts for whole-class shared reading than any other core program. These titles help students to build background knowledge and are available in print and digitally.
Amplify - Amplify Science is a K–8 science curriculum that blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers. Facing History - By combining industry-leading professional development with research-driven pedagogy and engaging curricular resources, Facing History’s unique and multi-faceted approach helps teachers and students meet a wide range of educational outcomes.

Our teachers create inclusive classrooms where students find their voice and develop an ethical and engaged civic identity. And, as our students explore history, they see how the past connects the world they live in, and how their choices today become our tomorrow.
